Recently a study published in Periodontology, the official publication of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), irecently illustrated green tea’s ability to help reduce symptoms of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth.  It is associated with the progression of other diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

940 male participants aged 49 – 59 were examined on three indicators of periodontal disease: periodontal pocket depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL) of gum tissue, and bleeding on probing (BOP) of the gum tissue.  It was found that for every cup of green tea consumed a day, there was a decrease across all three indicators. The antioxidant catechin was thought to be responsible for the reduction of symptoms of periodontal disease in the study they did.

“Periodontists believe that maintaining healthy gums is absolutely critical to maintaining a healthy body,” says Dr. David Cochran, DDS, Ph.D., President of the AAP and Chair of the Department of Periodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. “That is why it is so important to find simple ways to boost periodontal health, such as regularly drinking green tea – something already known to possess certain health-related benefits.”

Yay! Yet another reason to drink tea on a daily basis.

I Am Officially Part Of The Tea Association of Canada

avedacomfortingtea 150x150 I Am Officially Part Of The Tea Association of CanadaI had 3 different types of tea today, types, not cups!  If you wanna count cups I probably had about 7-8.  In the morning I started with Aveda’s Organic Comforting Tea with licorice and peppermint.  It’s really really good.  I recommend this tea for when you are stressed out and just need to relax.  The licorice and peppermint really pair well together as a tea.  For 140g it’s about $30 Canadian at any Aveda retailer.

The second tea I had today was Organic Rooibos and Honeybush by Traditional Medicinals.  I had this while I was reading, before lunch, and after lunch.  I’ve actually never had honeybush before.  A lady at the House of Tea told me that honeybush was from the bark part of a tree and it was more “woody” than rooibos.  I couldn’t clearly separate the taste of honeybush away from the rooibos although I did taste a more earthy tone in my normally pretty predictable sweet rooibos tea.  Next time I definitely have to try Honeybush by itself.

The third cup of tea I had today was at night when I was at Mikki’s house, True Blueberry Tea by Celestial Seasonings.  A little weak but you could taste the blueberries come through.

What did you drink today?

I also got my first Mighty Leaf samples today they were – Jade Oolong and Wuyi Oolong.  I gotta get on my video blogs, any ideas which format I should use?  Youtube, Vimeo, Vidder…?  Oh and I am officially part of the Tea Association of Canada.  Woo Hoo!

You never know where tea will show up.

photo 13 300x300 Kevin Rose and Tea?

Okay this is bizarre.  I was reading tea blogs and I randomly stumbled upon a tea Twitter account called goodtea with the name Kevin Rose in brackets.  What?  No way…could it be?  It was!!  I found out that Kevin Rose the founder of Digg.com is a tea enthusiast and this is his account!  This is so random!  I always assume people are more interested in consuming copious amounts of alcohol than tea.  I am always on Digg.com and recently I saw a video of Kevin with Gary Vaynerchuk (host of wine library TV) talking about wine.  Kevin even made a tea video showing how to keep your teas to avoid tea clutter and he used Silk Road Teas as a demonstration!  I just bought the documentary on the original founder of Silk Road Teas last week.  The company isn’t very big compared to let’s say Adiago.  Random!  Also, apparently he was the one who inspired Ocean of Tea.  I started following Ocean of Tea on Twitter before I even knew about that connection.  Okay so because this guy is one of the biggest celebrities on the net, there is a going to be a huge influx larger amount of interest regarding teas among the netizens.  This is amazing!  This proves I’m not some crazy old tea lady!  The more people who get educated and show an interest in teas the better.  It’s time to bring tea back!  Check out this tea documentary Kevin recommended.
